Chapter One

"I've never been with a cougar," Paul told me as he downed a shot.

"Oh, man—you're missing out!" I replied. "They're so much better than college girls—and a lot sexier, too."

Paul smiled as he handed me a tequila shot. "To cougars," he said, making a toast. I clinked his shot glass with mine. "To cougars!" I said as we both downed our tequila shots.

It was Cuervo, so luckily, the shot went down smoothly. Still, the night was young, and I was already pretty drunk.

Then again, I seriously could not have asked for a better 21st birthday. Paul and I had been friends since grade school, so he took me out for shots at Shawn's Pub, a popular hangout. Since Paul's 21st birthday was a few months prior, he was already pretty familiar with all the cool spots in town.

"We should head to a strip club after this," Paul said. "Show you some real tits on your birthday."

"If I can still stand," I joked as I downed another shot.

At 21-years-old, I was 6'2", 185 lbs. and in the best shape of my life. I was, by all means, a good-looking guy and never had any problem with the ladies. I could have probably started going to the bars with Paul, but, despite my manly physique, I had a bit of a baby face. Not to mention, I didn't own a fake ID. Paul was always trying to sneak me into the places, but I never wanted to risk getting caught. To me, it was just better to wait.

But now that the way was finally over, Paul had every intention of feeding me 21 shots of tequila. We got to the bar around 9 p.m. and by 11:30 p.m. I was already 15 shots deep. My head started spinning, and I could barely see straight. Seeing as I was such a newcomer to drinking and all, there was no way I'd be able to take down six more shots.

"Take me home," I told him. The room was now spinning, and I was doing my best not to pass out. "I think I'm done."

"You got six shots left," Paul shot back. " Now, come on," he said as he slid over shot number 16. "Bottoms up."

I pushed the shot away. "Not gonna happen," I told him.

"It's your birthday," Paul said. "Stop being a baby."

"If I even smell another shot, I'm going to puke all over the bar," I said. "And seeing as you're the one who drove me here, you're gonna have to be the one to clean it up." I gave him a cold stare. "You really want to risk that?"

Paul let out a long sigh, as if the reality of what I was saying was hitting him. "Fine," he said, "I'll take you home. But we have to stop for burritos—I'm starving."

I hadn't eaten since breakfast, and was pretty hungry too, as it turned out. I had a hankering for a steak burrito smothered in cheese and sour cream. Just the thought of sinking my teeth into one made my stomach rumble.
